Backyard Artificial Golf Turf Installation – Whitford

Better than the golf club’s practice green

The Brief

This homeowner in Whitford, Auckland, was a passionate golfer who wanted to practice his short game without leaving home. He had a large, uneven, mostly unused backyard that was a mess in winter. With our expert services, he saw the potential to turn it into a private putting and chipping green.

He needed a realistic, professional-grade surface that would mimic the feel of a real golf course. It had to be durable, low-maintenance, and look great all year round. Artificial putting green installation ticked his boxes and that’s when we came in for a hole-in-one solution!

The ProGroup Solution

We knew we had to create more than just a flat patch of fake grass; this needed to be a realistic, high-performance golfing surface. Here’s how we installed this artificial putting green:

Ground Preparation:

The first step was to clear the area of all existing grass and vegetation. We excavated the uneven ground to create a level, solid base. To prevent weeds from growing through the artificial grass, we laid a geotech membrane across the entire area.

Next, we backfilled the site with gap 7 aggregate (a blend of gravel and sand) and compacted it to create a firm, level surface. We then added a layer of blinding sand to smooth out the surface and provide a perfect base for the artificial grass.

Artificial Grass Installation:

We used two types of professional-grade artificial grass to create a realistic golfing experience. For the putting green, we chose a tight nap grass that mimicked the look and feel of a real putting surface. For the surrounding chipping area, we used a longer landscaping grass to simulate the fringe of a golf course.

We carefully laid the artificial grass over the prepared base, ensuring a seamless fit. The edges were secured using stainless steel U-shaped staples for durability and a neat, finished look.

Finishing Touches and Grooming:

To give the putting green a natural feel with consistent speed, we spread silica sand infill at a rate of 8 kg per square meter. This step not only weighed down the grass but also helped the fibres stand upright, creating a realistic ball roll.

We then used a motorised grooming broom to brush up the fibres, ensuring a natural appearance. The result was a perfectly manicured putting green that looked just like the real thing.

The Finished Putting Green

This backyard went from an uneven patch of grass to a golfer’s paradise. The putting green looked and felt like the real deal, with a true, consistent ball roll and a realistic chipping area.

The homeowner was stoked with his new putting green. It gave him the freedom to practice his short game at home whenever he wanted without having to fork over green fees at his club. Thoughtful artificial golf turf installation transformed an unused and unappealing area of their home into the ultimate practice ground – how’s that for a golfer’s dream.
