A low maintenance artificial grass solution for a Wellington backyard
The Brief
Our homeowner contacted us to provide a solution to their typical modern backyard. A flat section with some areas of lawn that was sodden in the winter, and burnt to a crisp in the summer. With young kids, they wanted a surface that could be used all year round without mud and grass clippings being dragged through the house, and was a lawnmower really necessary for such a small area of grass?

The ProGroup Solution
While the area was already relatively flat, there is a process to installing artificial grass to ensure the area drains well, and no organic growth comes through the surface.
Surface Penetration:
The existing lawn was removed using a mechanical turf cutter and the topsoil removed to a depth of around 70mm. This ensures that all organic roots are removed thereby eliminating the chance of weeds and grass regrowing under the new surface.
A layer of geotech material was laid over the clean earth to create a barrier against any dirt and organic material rising through the new surface. The 70mm was then backfilled with a crushed stone aggregate and compacted to provide a level free-draining sub-surface for the artificial grass.
Artificial Grass Installation:
Our customer selected our most popular artificial grass Luxury 38. This has a 38 mm high pile and flecks of browns and yellows to give a realistic look. It was custom-cut to fit the area perfectly, ensuring a seamless, natural look with no visible joins.
Ground staples around the edges and the weight of added infill sand anchored the grass in place.
Finishing Touches and Grooming:
To make the blades of grass stand up, the entire area was spread with 10kg/sqm of kiln dried sand which was mechanically brushed into the surface. This sand falls to the base of each blade and is invisible.
The finishing touch is a mechanical grooming resulting is a very realistic lawn that looks amazing.
The final solution
Our homeowner is thrilled with a backyard that their kids can play on all year round. The surface is free-draining, mud free, and safe for kids and pets alike.
The best bit is that the lawnmower is no longer required. Forget petrol, oil, maintenance, noise, and the hassle of having to spend weekends mowing. A rake to remove the odd leave, a spray with weedkiller a couple of times a year to kill any weeds that come from wind blown or dropped seeds from passing birds, is all that is required.
